Frankly, Pastor's Wife Rachel Mohn got tired of
pretending that she had it all together.
Well, that and she had what some would call an emotional and physical breakdown (complete with full-blown panic attacks), after a lifetime of living Type-A style, several years of wrestling with God, and a series of tragedies in the lives of those closest to her.
When she finally landed in a broken heap at the foot of the cross, baring her soul to the Savior, He gently lifted her chin, challenged her to be courageous, and waited patiently while she healed and learned to trust again. Then, in His sovereign, omniscient, redemptive way, He sent her back to the church to use her passion for performing and speaking to encourage other women to join her in the journey.
An "alumnus" of the day treatment program at Meier Clinic in Wheaton, Illinois, Rachel desires to help break the stigma attached to addressing mental health issues. While she doesn't have all of the answers, she's certainly asked a lot of the questions. She’s passionate about sharing the message that God’s power is made perfect in weakness (2 Cor. 12:9).
It's a serious message, but Rachel's presentation is packaged in humor, as she firmly believes that laughter is the best medicine...it has no co-pay! She's also convinced that God has a sense of humor, too. After all, He created her mother and she's the one who accidentally ended up at Rachel's college pool...without her clothes on! It's a story you've just got to hear in person. He also created her kids, who regularly entertain her (and everyone else who knows them) with their side-splitting commentary on everything from daily life to religion. You'll hear great things such as, "Why did your parents decide to name you 'Aunt Jenny'? That's a funny name."
Also, she's a pastor's wife. While you might not be LOL (laughing out loud) right now, Rachel does each time she realizes she's in this role. This was not something she'd dreamed of being. In fact, life in the "fishbowl" seemed quite unappealing. Yet today she finds herself embarking on her second decade of duty and embracing the title, pleased to bring her own definition to it.
In January of '09, Rachel whole-heartedly said once again to her husband, "'Wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you lodge, I will'...WHAT? You're taking us off 23 acres on the Kansas prairie to a two-bedroom campus apartment in Chicago to enroll in full-time seminary?" And thus, the adventure of seeking God's will for their family and ministry continues...
In addition to laughing, loving (her husband and three children) and learning, Rachel enjoys transparent relationships, witty-humored people (or those who enjoy hers), event planning of all types, running The "No Place Like Home" School, participating in couples' small groups, reading magazines, playing word games online, creative writing, eating chocolate, taking bubble baths, mentoring (both on the giving and receiving ends), bargain shopping, and finding new ways to use her creativity and love of the stage for the Lord! Oh, yes, and did we mention passionately consuming dark chocolate?
Basically, Rachel is refreshingly real...the first to admit it's been one of those "oops, I wore my panties inside-out" days. You're bound to be commiserating and chuckling, too, if you spend more than a few minutes with her!
